Argentine Tango Dance Classes In Ottawa
Argentine Tango From Buenos Aires
Argentine Tango dance classes at DQ Ballroom & Fitness Ottawa teach the improvised Buenos Aires partner dance with a close embrace and an emphasis on musical conversation. It is a different tradition from International Tango (which we also teach as part of the Standard ballroom syllabus), with no fixed choreography and a focus on connection.

Argentine Tango Classes For Beginners
Find The Embrace
Beginner Argentine Tango teaches walking in close embrace, the eight-count basic, the salida, the cruzada, and forward and backward ochos. The hardest concept for new dancers is letting the lead-and-follow improvise rather than memorising a routine, so we build the listening from day one.

Argentine Tango Classes For Intermediate Dancers
Listen To The Music
Intermediate Argentine Tango expands the Giros, the Sacadas, the Boleos, and the leg-and-foot interplay (Adornos) that is unique to Argentine Tango. We work on musical interpretation across different orchestras (Di Sarli, Pugliese, D'Arienzo) and the floor craft of the milonga.

Find Your Spot In An Argentine Tango Class
Argentine Tango captures a connection that no other partner dance offers, which is why students who fall for it often stay for years. If you enjoy Argentine Tango, you might also love our Friday Night social parties — we play Argentine Tango alongside International Standard, so it's a great place to keep dancing outside of class. If you're looking for International Standard Tango instead, you can find more details on the International Tango page.
Argentine Tango is taught at DQ Ballroom & Fitness as its own program. You can also browse all of our dance classes to see the full lineup.

Common Questions
The questions we hear most from new students.
How is Argentine Tango different from International Tango?expand_more
International Tango is part of the Standard ballroom syllabus: closed hold, sharp staccato footwork, fixed figures danced on a count. Argentine Tango is improvised, uses a closer embrace, and focuses on musical conversation rather than fixed choreography. We teach both as separate programs.
Can I dance Argentine Tango at social parties?expand_more
Yes. Once you have the basic and the eight-count down, you can navigate a milonga or social. Ottawa has a dedicated milonga scene, and many of our students go to those events alongside our own Friday Night Party.
Do I need a partner for Argentine Tango?expand_more
No. Group classes rotate partners so you lead or follow with everyone in the room. The close embrace is actually easier to learn this way because you feel many different leads and follows.
