Rumba Dance Classes In Ottawa
Rumba With Feeling
Rumba dance classes at DQ Ballroom & Fitness Ottawa teach the slowest of the five International Latin dances. Long, deliberate steps with deep Cuban hip action give Rumba its distinctive character and make it one of the most expressive dances in the Latin syllabus. Beginner and intermediate group classes are open with no partner required.

Rumba Dance Classes For Beginners
Find Your Hips
Beginner Rumba teaches the progressive walks, side steps, the New Yorks, the hand-to-hand, and the underarm turn. The slow tempo gives you time to feel the Cuban hip action, body isolations, and fluidity in your movements.

Rumba Classes For Intermediate & Advanced Dancers
Tell The Story
Intermediate Rumba expands to the Hip Twists, the Spiral Turns, the Sliding Doors, the Alemana, and the Fan. We refine the connection, the body language, and the musical interpretation that style your Rumba into something expressive rather than a routine.

Common Questions
The questions we hear most from new students.
Is Rumba a good dance to start with?expand_more
Yes. The slow tempo gives you time to feel each movement properly, which makes Rumba an excellent starting point. You'll work on hip action, body isolations, and partner connection from your very first class.
What music is Rumba danced to?expand_more
Slow Latin music in 4/4 time at roughly 25 to 28 beats per minute. Many Latin pop ballads fit Rumba timing, and a wide range of jazz standards work too once you learn to feel the underlying pulse.
How is International Rumba different from American Rumba?expand_more
The International Rumba uses the slow-quick-quick basic and a strict syllabus of figures. American Rumba uses a quick-quick-slow basic and is closer to a slow Salsa in feel. We teach the International version in our group classes.
Is Rumba a good wedding first dance?expand_more
For couples who want something slow and connected, yes. The slow tempo fits a wide range of romantic ballads, and the close connection looks intimate without complex choreography.
