Samba Dance Classes In Ottawa
Samba With Brazilian Energy
Samba dance classes at DQ Ballroom & Fitness Ottawa teach the Brazilian-rooted International Samba, with its signature bouncing knee action, rolling hip movement, and travelling figures. It is one of the five International Latin dances and a strong cardio workout, taught at beginner and intermediate level with no partner required.

Samba Dance Classes For Beginners
Find The Bounce
Beginner Samba focuses on the Samba bounce action, the basic movement, the Whisks, the Samba Walks, and the Travelling Voltas. Finding the bounce is the hardest part for new dancers, so we drill it carefully before adding figures on top.

Common Questions
The questions we hear most from new students.
Is Samba suitable for beginners?expand_more
Yes. The Samba bounce action takes a little time to find, but beginner classes are built around drilling it from the very first lesson. Once the bounce clicks, the rest of the figures come together quickly.
What music is Samba danced to?expand_more
Brazilian Samba music in 2/4 time at roughly 50 to 56 beats per minute. Many Latin pop tracks with strong bass-and-drum patterns work for International Samba practice.
Is Samba a strong cardio workout?expand_more
Yes, probably the most cardio-intensive Latin dance because of the constant bounce and travelling figures. Many students notice their fitness improving in the first few weeks of consistent Samba classes.
How is International Samba different from Brazilian street Samba?expand_more
International Samba uses a partner hold and a structured figure syllabus. Brazilian street Samba (Samba no Pé) is solo. The bounce and the rhythm are shared, but International Samba focuses on lead-and-follow partnership.
